After diagnosed with Crohn's disease at age 20, Betsy began doctor shopping for various pains. She knew better. Her father was a pharmacist.Eventually, she began treatment in Chapel Hill with a psychiatrist-pain manager expert. He said she had somatization personality disorder. By the time we, her family, realized the seriousness of her addiction, I was hosptialized for treatment for Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. We planned an intervention after I finished the chemo, but her husband was not on board with this. Less than 6 months after I was released from the hospital, she took a contraindicatory dose of Oxycontin, muscle relaxant and cough suppressant. We got the dreaded call from a policeman and knew that we were too late to help her.
