Hallucinogens

LSD (Lysergic Acid Diethylamide)

  • Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD) is a synthetic drug that has been abused for its hallucinogenic properties since the 1960's.
  • LSD produces delusions and visual hallucinations that distort the user's sense of time and identity.
  • LSD typically is sold as a liquid or applied to a blotter paper, sugar cubes, gelatin squares and tablets.
  • LSD is used by individuals of all ages it is a particular concern for high school students. More than 8 percent of high school seniors in the United States used the drug at least once.
  • Effects associated with LSD use are unpredictable and include ? feeling of despair, terrifying fears-losing control, going insane, or dying.
  • Flash backs during which certain aspects of their LSD experience recur even though they have stopped taking the drug.
  • Some have suffered fatal accidents while under the influence of LSD. LSD users may develop long lasting psychoses, such as schizophrenia or severe depression.

Mescaline Psilocybin

  • Psilocybin and psilocin are obtained from certain mushrooms indigenous to tropical and subtropical regions of South America, Mexico, and the United States.
  • As pure chemicals at doses of 10-20mg. these hallucinogens produce muscle relaxation, dilation of pupils, vivid visual and auditory distortions and emotional disturbances.
  • Effects produced by consuming preparations of dried or brewed mushrooms are far less predictable and as a consequence the hallucinogenic activity as well as the extent of toxicity produced by various plant samples are often unknown.
